Course Instructor

David Musnick, MD is a dynamic speaker and educator who speaks nationally on topics of medical screening, communications, exercise and why patients don’t heal. He is board certified in internal medicine and sports medicine and is in private practice in Bellevue, WA. He has taken numerous physical therapy courses in manual and exercise therapy and teaches orthopedic medicine and sports medicine at Bastyr University. He is on the clinical faculty of orthopedics and sports medicine at the University of Washington Medical School. Dr. Musnick has additional training and expertise in communication techniques, osteopathic and chiropractic techniques, applied kinesiology, nutrition, prolotherapy injections and functional and environmental medicine. He is the author of the book Conditioning for Outdoor Fitness (published November 2004 by Mountaineers books, Seattle), which focuses on functional strength training exercises and program design. Dr. Musnick uses many different slides and learning techniques to facilitate comprehension and interest.

Medical Screening with Special Topics on Nutrition, Neurological and Orthopedic Problems and Why Patients Don't Heal


This two-day course has an extensive amount of practical information to help medical professionals be more knowledgeable and comfortable treating patients with medical, orthopedic, and neurological problems. It will expand your understanding of chronic and acute pain. It will expand your knowledge base of signs and symptoms, as well as how internal organ systems function, are interrelated, and how they relate to the Neuro-Musculoskeletal system. Participants will learn about nutrition as well as supplements for many conditions as well as for optimal health. Participants will also learn the newest information on how to maintain optimal health and prevent diseases for their patients, themselves and their family. This seminar will help you to take your care to a new level of comprehensiveness and excellence. Exercise, pain management and factors hindering response to manual treatments are also explored in-depth. Updated medical knowledge for the assessment of major medical disorders such as musculoskeletal, cardiac, pulmonary, endocrine, rheumatologic, neurologic, abdominal, renal and reproductive disorders are integrated into the course lecture. This course is essential for physical therapists, occupational therapists, and athletic trainers who want to develop comprehensive assessment and treatment techniques. It will enhance your overall evaluation and treatment approach to achieving positive results for your patients. Participants of this class will utilize a screening checklist and an exercise prescription form and will receive patient handouts on diet and nutrition.

  • Screen for medical, orthopedic and neurological symptoms and signs and make appropriate referrals.
  • Understand why patients do not respond to manual therapy or exercise interventions including stress, food sensitivities, sleep and visceral disorders, scars, dental disorders, depression, etc.
  • Perform a screening exam to check vital signs and to rule out serious medical disorders.
  • Perform visceral examinations of lymph nodes, chest, abdomen, kidneys and hernia.
  • Utilize a peak flow meter to evaluate asthmatic and COPD patients.
  • Communicate with physicians in an educated manner regarding medical symptoms or for requesting further medical tests.
  • Identify pain referral patterns for lymph nodes, ligaments, facets and internal organs.
  • Evaluate for benign hypermobility syndrome and develop an effective treatment plan for regional hypermobility.
  • Understand the factors contributing to pain sensitization and chronic pain including inflammation, sleep dysfunction, ganglia, dental factors, scars, and toxins.
  • Understand the underlying mechanisms of chronic pain and develop an effective treat ment program.
  • Discuss the reason for poor muscle recruitment with chronic pain clients and how to test and reeducate the muscles.
  • Learn specific nutritional guidelines to prevent heart disease, stroke, cancer, ADHD, chronic pain, dementia, depression and memory loss.
  • Understand the implications of supplementation for joint and GI health, energy and brain function.
  • Utilize specific web sites and references for nutritional supplementation updates.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge on how to use supplements for the health of your patients, yourself and your family.
