A Systematic Treatment Approach to Wound Care

Course Outline

This two-day basic to intermediate wound care course is presented in an innovative format which combines Ms. Hazard’s expertise in wound care and the management of the diabetic foot with evidence based medicine. The result is a systematic framework within which to practice wound care management immediately upon return to each clinical setting.
Wounds are analyzed in terms of both etiology and wound characteristics. The pathophysiology of chronic wounds is presented against the backdrop of normal wound healing. Barriers to wound healing such as comorbidities, infection, seating surface selection and nutrition are presented and discussed in class.
Lab instruction includes cleansing and selective debridement with scalpels and scissors, compression options and dressing selection and characteristics. A thorough understanding of this information and its immediate application to the clinical setting are the result of these interactive sessions.
Participants leave with several useful clinical tools including pressure ulcer prediction scales, a documentation checklist and a diabetic foot screening form. A thorough diabetic foot evaluation form, consistent with American Diabetes Association guidelines for annual foot assessment, is also included. Course participants will be prepared to effectively manage the unique healing processes of neuropathic, venous, arterial and pressure ulcers.

Course Objectives

• Understand and discuss the fundamentals of normal wound healing and discuss the pathophysiology of chronic wounds.
• Perform a complete wound evaluation.
• Perform a complete diabetic foot screen and make appropriate recommendations for management of the neuropathic foot.
• Identify proper skin management techniques to prevent wounds.
• Identify and document both granulation and necrotic tissue.
• Understand the goals for wound debridement and choose the most appropriate debridement technique.
• Perform selective debridement techniques using a scalpel, scissors and pick-ups (tweezers).
• Identify and understand the indications and contraindications for sharp debridement using a scalpel and scissors.
• Develop and implement wound dressing strategies for each wound type and characteristic using current wound products.
• Implement successful programs for management of wounds of neuropathic, arterial, venous and
pressure origins.
• Evaluate modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, hydrotherapy and monochromatic infrared light and their effect on wound healing.
• Devise detailed treatment programs based on wound etiology and characteristics.
• Understand the role of nutrition in successful wound healing.
• Understand the importance of seating surface selection in prevention and healing of pressure ulcers.
• Develop programs to assist the patient and/or caregivers with the self management and prevention of ulcers.

Mitzi Hazard, PT, CDE, C.Ped. graduated cum laude from California State University at Long Beach with a BS in Physical Therapy in 1992. She received her national board certifications as a diabetes educator from NCBDE in May of 2003 and as a pedorthist from BCP in June 2005. Her professional passion is the achievement of techniques and programs that maximize the healing of wounds.

Ms. Hazard has dedicated a major portion of her career to studying effective treatments for wound care and to the prevention and treatment of diabetic neuropathic wounds. She worked for Olympic Medical Center (OMC) in Sequim, Washington from May of 1999 until 2004. She was the manager of rehabilitation services and a diabetes educator in the OMC ADA-accredited diabetes self-management education program. She served as a wound care resource for both rehabilitation and nursing staff consulting on difficult wound cases of arterial, venous and neuropathic origin. She has developed staff education programs related to diabetes, wound care, custom foot orthotics and the diabetic foot in the geriatric population.

In November 2004, she opened her own private practice, Feet First Custom Orthotics, specializing in custom foot orthotics and diabetic neuropathic ulcer management.

Ms. Hazard has over 13 years of advanced wound care experience in a variety of settings including outpatient clinics, skilled nursing facilities, home care and in the hospital environment.

Ms. Hazard has been an invited speaker to numerous regional and national groups on the topic of wound management and prevention and the assessment and treatment of the diabetic foot. She has lectured to the Native American Diabetes Education Program in an effort to decrease the incidence of ulcers and amputations. Ms. Hazard is also a NovaCare certified geriatric specialist and has conducted many regional training programs for them. Mitzi’s educational and professional experiences provide her with the ability to effectively educate a wide range of medical professionals.
