The Running Course

Course Outline

Running is a natural but intricate combination of interactions between the musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiopulmonary systems. This course focuses on developing an understanding of the biomechanical events of running including pathomechanics. Participants will develop an evaluation process, which will take into account various elements affecting the functionality of the runner. The 4 R’s: the Run (training), the Runner (physical and biomechanical), the Running (form), and Rehabilitation (treatment) form the framework of instruction throughout the course. This framework forms the foundation for effectively developing treatment programs and training alternatives. Laboratory exercise will enhance the participants’ understanding of the lecture material.
Specific instruction is provided on running shoes, gait cycle and visual systems. Understanding the choices of clinical video use will enhance the participants’ ability to best “prescribe” a running shoe and clarify the use of orthotics. At the conclusion of instruction, the participant will be able to develop optimal focused training/treatment regimes utilizing the latest rehabilitation approaches for the runner. The skills acquired in this class can be immediately applied in the clinical setting.

Course Objectives

I. Understand:
a. The phases of the running gait cycle and the biomechanical events that occur in each.
b. Poor running mechanics and pathomechanics and their causal relationship to injury.
c. The basic principles of training in running with regard to frequency, duration and intensity.
II. Be able to:
a. Obtain a neutral orthotics cast.
b. Prescribe an appropriate running shoe.
c. Perform an assessment of running gait including visual analysis and clinical video usage.
III. Be able to discuss and develop:
a. An appropriate open chain, closed chain, and functional evaluation of runners.
b. Orthotic strategies based on biomechanical principles.
c. Effective training, treatment and functional rehabilitation strategies based on assessment findings.

Barry Morgan, PT received a BS degree in anatomy from West Texas State University and a BS degree in physical therapy from the University of Texas. For the past 18 years, he has practiced in a variety of orthopedic and sports medicine settings. He has lectured on many orthopedic topics with a special focus on orthotics and running shoe selection. Additionally, Barry has researched shoe design for the athlete and its relationship to injuries. His experience as a tri-athlete and therapist enables him to assist marathoners to maximize performance levels. For six years he has worked closely with elite tri-athletes at a number of training camps located in the Texas hill country, providing video running analysis and musculoskeletal evaluations.

Barry was a representative for the United States of America on a sports medicine delegation team for “informational exchange of ideas” to Australia prior to the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Barry has performed hundreds of video running evaluations in a variety of clinical and non-clinical settings and applies this practical knowledge in his teaching. His diverse background dealing with orthopedic and sports medicine, athletes, orthotics, and shoe selection provides a broad knowledge base and an eclectic approach to his seminars.
